A $500 cash prize or $900 vacation package for the winning entry is offered by the site developers.

A new subdivision about a mile west of the Imperial Park turnoff is on the verge of being ready for new homes to locate there, except for one important detail: the subdivision has no name.

Larry Melanchuk, Associate Broker with RE/MAX Cold Lake 2000 Realty Ltd., said that the new subdivision, is aimed at satisfying the request for acreage properties. "In my 24 years of real estate, the two most common requests from people moving into the area are waterfront property and acreages," said Larry. Bridging the gap between the city's north and south sides, the new subdivision will have approximately 50 acreage lots ranging in size from 1.5 acres to 4 acres. The smaller lots are selling for as low as $36,000. Homes will begin locating there as early as June and development will continue over the next three years. Larry pointed out that the new subdivision is strategically located for convenience to downtown shopping, the lakeshore, the oilpatch, Tri-City Mall, CFB Cold Lake, and the future site of the city's recreation facility.

While people living within the city limits are limited when it comes to finding room for recreation vehicles, outdoor hockey rinks and gardens, not so with these acreage lots. The smallest lots are still about nine times larger than the average city lot. "The list is endless as to why these demands (for acreage property) are there. City lots have more limitations," said Melanchuk. Each lot can have an additional out building, such as a workshop or detached garage, as big as 2,600 square feet.

Larry mentioned that the developers (Lyle Reid and Jerry McCaffrey) will look to improve the municipal reserve to meet the needs of the residents and the requirements of the MD. They want to enhance the environment by having such things as an attractive brick-and-mortar entrance to the subdivision and planting trees along the property lines, which will result in more privacy for the residents. Since the eventual name of the subdivision will paint a picture of what to expect from the neighbourhood, the developers want the name to best reflect what the area has to offer. There is opportunity for community involvement by suggesting a name for the new development. "There are lots of people with ideas in history and they could come up with an appropriate name for this subdivision," he said.

From the names submitted in the contest, the developers will decide on the best one, and the person who submitted the winning name has the choice of two prizes: $500 cash or a vacation package valued at $900. The vacation package entails two nights accommodation for four adults at Bighorn Meadows in Radium, BC, and either 18 holes of golf (four rounds) at Radium Springs Golf course or an adult one-day lift package at Panorama Mountain Ski Resort

People with suggestions for the new subdivision can drop them off, along with their name, address and phone number at the Cold Lake Sun office (5217-55 Street) or RE/MAX Cold Lake 2000 (5402-55A Street). Subdivision names can also be e-mailed to Larry at:
